Guide to Probe Maintenance & Cable Protection – Extend Service Life of NDT Accessories

Ultrasonic probes and cables are vulnerable components of NDT testing systems. Damaged crystals, wear plates or cable shielding will cause unstable waveforms, low signal-to-noise ratio and unreliable inspection results. Proper maintenance helps extend service life and lower operating costs.

Probe Maintenance Tips
  1. Clean the probe surface with soft cloth after each test to remove couplant, metal dust and oil. Do not scrape the contact surface with hard tools.
  2. Replace worn wear plates or membranes in time to protect the internal crystal.
  3. Avoid dropping, hitting or heavy pressure on probes. Internal crystals are fragile.
  4. Do not operate normal-temperature probes on high-temperature workpieces. Select high-temperature probes for hot surface inspection.
  5. Store probes in original shockproof boxes in dry and clean environments when not in use.
Cable Protection Guidelines
  1. Plug and unplug cables by gripping the connector, never pull the cable directly.
  2. Avoid sharp bending, tight winding, rolling or heavy squeezing on cables.
  3. Check cable jacket regularly. Replace cables once cracks or exposed shielding appear.
  4. Keep connectors covered with dust caps to prevent oxidation and moisture.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
  1. Leaving probes on rough steel surfaces without protection
  2. Cleaning probes with strong corrosive solvents
  3. Sharply folding cables for long-term storage
Simple Pre-work Inspection

Check probe appearance, cable sheath and connector condition. Perform a test on calibration block to confirm stable echoes before formal inspection.
